HTML5 support for older browsers

Sitepoint released a great post today HTML5 Forms: The Markup</a> it explains the various input tags that can be used in HTML 5. Some of these are very useful such as range, date, datetime, datetime-local, week, color. Unfortunately most of these have mixed support across browsers IE is lacking the most.

I've come across a github repo <a href='https://github.com/zoltan-dulac/html5Forms.js'>html5Forms.js</a> that "Implements a subset of the HTML5 Forms module, including calendars, colour swatches, sliding widgets, client side validation and more." meaning HTML 5 elements can be used, any browser that does not support the tags uses the js file to add support.

In order for this to work Modernizr must be used for feature detection.
Here is an example for usage:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
        <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content=
        "text/html; utf-8">

        <title>HTML5 date time examples</title>

        <!-- Needed for Forms Feature Detection -->
        <script type="text/javascript" src="js/modernizr.com/Modernizr-2.5.3.forms.js">
        <!-- Needed for Validation -->
        <script type="text/javascript" src="js/html5Forms.js" data-webforms2-support="date" data-webforms2-force-js-validation="true" data-lang="qq">

    <body id="myExample" class="html5Widgets-debug">

        <input type="datetime" name="DateTimeTest" value="">

For the past 12 years, I’ve been developing applications for the web using mostly PHP. I do this for a living and love what I do as every day there is something new and exciting to learn.

In my spare time, the web development community is a big part of my life. Whether managing online programming groups and blogs or attending a conference, I find keeping involved helps me stay up to date. This is also my chance to give back to the community that helped me get started, a place I am proud to be apart of.

Besides programming I love spending time with friends and family and can often be found together going out catching the latest movie, staying in playing games on the sofa or planning a trip to someplace I’ve never been before.
